Kimber
Panthera “Pickle”

The Ligress, "Kimber", is
a result of human intervention in nature’s order.
Her father was a Lion and
mother was a Tiger. The resulting offspring are generally unpredictable
in personality and
usually born sterile. While not a product of nature, she is a unique and
beautiful exception
to the normal
irresponsible tampering with nature often done in the private sector.
She arrived at the Zoo in
1998. Her original home was in Oregon where she was privately owned
by the owner of Evergreen
Aviation. (The home of Howard Hughes Famous “Spruce Goose”;
the world’s largest
wooden aircraft ever to fly.) They had rescued Kim from a private breeder
they had witnessed
mistreating the animal. She is truly the exception to the rule
for a cat having been in
the private sector. The staff at Evergreen did an exceptional job of caring
for her.
However, due to changes
in the local ordinances concerning private ownership,
they had to find a new
home for her. After the owner reviewed dozens of facilities,
Cat Tales was chosen as
the best choice for her to retire.
Evergreen assisted in
funding for the materials needed for
her exhibit and Kim has
adjusted nicely since she arrived.
Kimber is one of the most
vocal animals here at the zoo during dinner time.
If you have a chance to
see her at feeding time, during an in person visit to the Zoo,
you will see food is a
serious priority when it comes to carnivores.
